The 613 Good Things From God

Printable Version

A listing of Torah, broken down into 613 commands, by a rabbi called Maimonides (son of Maimon, or Moses ben Maimon) also known as Rambam, around the 12th century. It is more properly a list of good things that God gave His people formerly at Mt. Sinai.

248 Positive Mitzvot/Commands

This list of Torah was developed by Maimonides (1135-1204 C. E.). It is organized by subject and has Scripture references for each point. Keep in mind that this is his idea of how the commands should be interpreted and applied. His idea was perhaps not always as exact as it should be, because he interpreted from his own culture and knowledge handed down to him by other rabbis.

P207 for instance (on loving the proselyte or convert) is not correct. The exact word in the reference is 'ger' (gayr) meaning stranger or sojourner. If the word really meant 'proselyte' or 'convert' then the verse would read "So show your love for the proselyte, for you were proselytes in the land of Egypt" (NASB). Obviously the people of Israel were not 'proselytes' in Egypt, unless you count the fact that they had historically great difficulty getting idolatry out of their worship. The word 'ger' (gayr) should be translated as 'stranger' to be consistent with the actual meaning of the Hebrew.

N354 is another example. A mamzer is a person born from adultery of a married woman or incest. Determining a mamzer is very problematic, however. The verse is very clear - a person who is illegitimate (if you can figure out who that is) was not allowed into the congregation of Israel. But we don't know exactly what "enter into the congregation" means. Did it mean that the mamzer couldn't participate in sacrifice? Did it mean they couldn't own land, or give money to the Temple? For some, such as children of Ammon and Moab, it looks like after ten generations the prohibition was lifted. A plain reading of the verse tells us that for a lot of people this was a temporary command (one that lasted for ten generations). The person born from an illicit relationship has no choice in the matter, and may not even know if they are mamzer or not (like, what about the eighth generation guy?). Besides, who are we to judge who is a mamzer (in modern times) and who is not? How do we know what our parentage is?

It was interpretations such as these that caused Jesus (and the disciples) to have so many clashes with Jewish leadership. It wasn't the Torah per se. It was the traditions and faulty interpretations that resulted not only in false application of the Word, but collisions with those who really did want to follow the Living Oracles of God. Love should be first, especially when in doubt.

The list is, however, excellent for study and a convenient way of grouping commands so that a person can easily find related instructions.

If we love God as He has loved us, many items on this list will be no brainers and the others will integrate easily as we learn and grow the fruit of the Spirit.
