This book is not for the average churchgoer who thinks everything is fine in the Church, or even just their church. This is for the people who are aware that something is not right in the Church and wonder why. It's for those who hunger and thirst for God and can't understand why they seem to be starving while on a diet of philosophies of men the Nicolaitans teach.
About 30 years after the ascension of Jesus, Paul warns the Ephesian elders in Acts 20:29–30 ESV: “I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them.” About 30 years after this Jesus warned the Ephesians about Nicolaitans and said He "hates their works." Are the Nicolaitans and the wolves speaking twisted things in Paul's warning the same? Did the Ephesians manage to get rid of the Nicolaitans, or have they spread throughout the church and are still present today under different names? Does it matter today?
Nicolaitan is a rather obscure reference in the Bible, but inside the book you’ll see that the seeds of Nicolaitan teachings have produced fruit well into our own time. Nicolaitans don’t use that name anymore, but it might surprise you that they are still around. In his book, Bruce illuminates biblical connections between Nicolaitans and other “elites” who lord their position over lay people. This includes Pharisees, Sadducees, scribes, Jezebel, Balaam, wolves in sheep's clothing, false teachers, works that are hated by Jesus, and modern teachers you may know.
Bruce shows believers the way to increased maturity, abundant life, and fruit of the Spirit from Jesus in his book Whole Bible Christianity, Blessings Pressed Down and Overflowing. He continues his work here, identifying the false teachers who would block those blessings. A repentant Nicolaitan himself, by the time he was 40 Bruce had tired of the useless struggle to match church Nicolaitan teachings to the Bible, and departed. But like many others, he stayed with his Messiah. And since leaving Nicolaitan teachings 20 years ago, learning to just read the Word and do it, living water has gushed into his life out of the Rock.
It's important to realize that the Nicolaitans were part of the congregations. They were leaders claiming to teach the Word and follow Jesus, but their works showed them to be liars and false shepherds. Believers in Ephesus hated the works of the Nicolaitans as did Jesus, but in Pergamum the Nicolaitans found some acceptance and agreement. Jesus groups the Nicolaitans together with Balaam and Jezebel, even though the Nicolaitans may have used slightly different methods.
What we hope for you with the writing of this book is to help you establish a better connection to God, show the truth in the Word, encourage you with life more abundant and assist you to become more mature (Hebrews 5:11-6:3). Modern Nicolaitans and their bureaucracies (the word means "rule by desk") are misdirecting us and robbing us of life and freedom in Him. They have placed themselves in our way, offering a pseudo-relationship with an empty caricature of a Jesus and a false hope in a corrupted new covenant. You have a direct relationship with God and don't need any intermediary other than our High Priest Jesus. He tore the curtain in the Temple and is giving us the bread of heaven in the whole of His loving Word. Take it and eat. Circumcise your heart. Ignore the philosophies of men and go right to the source of life.
